Downtown Salem has a new cleanup crew.
Twice a week, guests and staff from Union Gospel Mission of Salem’s Men’s Mission head into downtown with trash bags and cleanup supplies to help keep local streets and sidewalks looking their best. The Clean Team gives men staying at the Mission an opportunity to serve the neighborhood around them while contributing to a place that’s part of their everyday lives.
It’s a simple gesture with a meaningful message: people experiencing homelessness aren’t separate from the Salem community. They’re neighbors, residents, customers, pedestrians, volunteers, and people who want opportunities to give back.
Taking an Active Role in Downtown Salem
Union Gospel Mission’s Men’s Mission is located on Commercial Street NE in the heart of Salem, putting its guests within walking distance of downtown businesses, parks, services, and gathering spaces.
According to Salem Reporter’s coverage of the program, members of the Clean Team head downtown twice a week to collect trash from city streets. During an August 14 cleanup, a five-person crew started shortly after 7 a.m., spreading out along the sidewalks with bright orange garbage bags as downtown began its day.
The work provides an immediate, visible result. A piece of litter gets picked up, which makes the sidewalk look cleaner, which makes the block feel a little more cared for.
But the impact also goes beyond appearances. Participating in the cleanup gives Mission guests a chance to take an active role in maintaining the neighborhood they share with downtown employees, business owners, shoppers, visitors, and other Salem residents.
Homelessness Doesn’t Erase Community Membership
Conversations about homelessness often focus on what people need from a community, including shelter, food, health care, employment, or housing. Those needs are real, and organizations throughout Salem work every day to help connect people with those resources.
Union Gospel Mission provides services including meals, shelter, recovery programs, employment preparation, and other support intended to help people move toward greater stability.
UGM’s Clean Team offers another side of that relationship: people receiving support can also have something to contribute. Experiencing homelessness doesn’t take away someone’s desire to be useful, care about where they live, or feel connected to the people around them. Giving people opportunities to participate in community life can help make downtown feel more shared rather than divided.
Small Efforts Add Up
Keeping a downtown district clean takes consistent work, and Union Gospel Mission’s Clean Team is one piece of a much larger effort to care for Salem’s public spaces.
For the men participating, the twice-weekly outings create an opportunity to get outside, work alongside others, and see the results of their efforts in real time. For the broader community, it’s also a reminder that caring for Salem can take many forms. Sometimes, it looks like a group of neighbors heading out early in the morning with garbage bags and a willingness to help.
The Union Gospel Mission Clean Team is doing its part to care for downtown Salem while showing something worth remembering: everyone has the ability to contribute to the community they call home.
