Have you ever wondered how decisions are actually made at City Hall? Or perhaps you’ve considered serving on a local board but weren’t sure where to start? The City of Albany is officially inviting residents to step behind the curtain with the return of the Civic Academy.

In partnership with Portland State University’s National Policy Consensus Center, this free, six-week course is designed to transform curious residents into informed community leaders.

What is Civic Academy?

The academy isn’t just a lecture series—it’s a hands-on “front-row seat” to local government. Participants will explore the inner workings of city operations, from infrastructure and public safety to urban planning and budgeting.

The highlight of the program is a collaborative research project. Working in small groups, the cohort will tackle a real-world local issue and present their findings directly to the City Council during a public meeting in June. It’s an authentic opportunity to have your voice heard and your ideas considered by city leadership.

Program Details & Commitment

The City is looking for a diverse cohort of 12 residents (age 16+) who reflect the broad spirit of Albany. Priority is given to those who are new to civic leadership and are eager to learn.

  • When: Thursday evenings, April 23 – May 28, 2026
  • Time: 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Dinner is provided!)
  • Where: Albany City Hall, Council Chambers
  • The Finale: Presentation to City Council on June 10.

How to Apply

Space is strictly limited to 12 participants to ensure a high-quality, hands-on experience. Applications are being accepted now through 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

Whether you’re a student looking to build a resume or a long-time resident wanting to give back, the Civic Academy is the perfect place to start your leadership journey.
