A big change is coming to one of downtown Salem’s most-loved family playgrounds. The Riverfront Park playground will close on Monday, April 13, 2026, for a full replacement project, with the new playground expected to open by mid- to late summer 2026. During construction, the area around the playground will be fenced off, some spaces in the south parking lot will be used for staging, and the nearby restrooms will also be closed.

A Longtime Family Favorite in Salem
For years, Riverfront Park has been a go-to place to play for many local families. The current playground dates back to the late 1990s, so this update marks a meaningful new era for a spot that has been part of childhood memories in Salem for nearly three decades.
Bigger, More Inclusive Playground
The redesigned playground is meant to create a more welcoming experience for children of all abilities. City officials said the new layout was shaped in part by outreach to families who need more inclusive play options, with features meant to support different mobility and sensory needs while still making the space fun and engaging for everyone. It will also be larger than the current playground and separated from nearby park paths to reduce friction between playground users and people passing through the area.
New Features Families Can Look Forward To
When the playground reopens, families can expect a mix of accessibility upgrades and imaginative new play elements.
Plans include a quieter low-sensory area called the Eagle’s Nest, an accessible spinner, a music station, fencing around the full playground, rolling bars on one of the slides, smooth paved pathways, and an extra-wide bridge that allows wheelchair access to the second level of the main play structure. The city also says the specialized synthetic turf is designed to reduce static electricity, which can help prevent interference with devices like cochlear implants.
Envisioning Nature-Themed Play
The new design also leans into a wildlife and nature theme that feels right at home in Oregon. Planned features include a log climbing element called the Beaver Dam, a rock scramble made with real boulders, and synthetic turf with color variations meant to resemble a watershed. The entry area will also include animal-themed riddle circles in the pavement, adding one more interactive touch for kids and their caregivers to discover together.
Thoughtfully Designed for Caregivers, Too
The project includes more than just new equipment for kids. The city says the updated playground will have multiple seating areas for caregivers, more shade trees, and a new 12-foot-wide path that curves around the play area and connects to a shaded space intended for casual picnics. Only one tree is expected to be removed as part of the expansion.
Local Partners Are Helping Reinvest in Salem’s Parks and Kids
Salem-based Park N Play Northwest is supplying much of the playground equipment, and Dalke Construction, also based in Salem, is the general contractor. According to the city, the project is funded through park system development charges, the voter-approved 2022 Safety and Livability Bond, and a $770,000 grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. The total playground project is expected to cost about $2.53 million.
Reimagining a Salem Favorite for the Next Generation
When it reopens later this year, the new Riverfront Park playground will continue to be a place where Salem families can play. For a play area that’s been part of local family life for decades, this project is built for imagination, movement, and inclusion. It’s a continued investment in Salem kids, Salem parks, and the shared spaces that bring the community together.
