Yuriy always knew he was destined to be a business owner, but he never imagined it would be in the electrical trade. His journey began almost two decades ago when his uncle offered him a job as an electrician. “I kind of fell into it, and I didn’t like it at first,” Yuriy admits. However, over time, he grew to love the trade. His skills improved, and he saw the opportunity to make a difference. “When you’ve been doing something for almost 20 years, you start to enjoy it more. Now, I absolutely love what I do.”

In January 2021, Yuriy founded Mountain Coast Electric Co. Since then, the company has grown steadily, earning a reputation for reliability, quality, and exceptional customer service.

Yuriy’s passion for his work goes beyond the technical aspects of electrical services. “I’m not passionate about electrical work itself, but I’m passionate about connecting with people and helping them every day,” he explains. I’m passionate about connecting with people and getting to brighten up their lives every single day.”

One of Yuriy’s most memorable experiences was during the ice storms a couple of years ago. He recalls helping an elderly couple who were struggling to set up a generator. The husband, who had Alzheimer’s, couldn’t remember how to do it, and his wife was at a loss. “Being able to come into their home, get their power back on, and then tell them it was on the house—that feeling is worth more than anything you can charge,” Yuriy shares.

Challenges and Milestones

Becoming a licensed electrician in Oregon is no small feat. Yuriy had to go through a rigorous process, including obtaining a journeyman license which takes four or five years. Then accumulating 8,000 hours of work experience which takes another four or five years. And finally passing the challenging Master Electrician’s test which has a 3% pass rate and then getting his contractor’s license and bond.

Starting Mountain Coast Electric Co brought its own set of challenges. “The last three years have been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most fun,” Yuriy says. Despite the difficulties, he finds immense joy in building his business, hiring employees, and watching his company grow. “I’m having a blast, and I love the freedom and flexibility it gives me.”

Mountain Coast Electric Co currently operates with two crews of journeymen and apprentices, totaling four employees. Yuriy and his wife, who manages the administrative side of the business, round out the team. “My wife is the glue that keeps everything together,” Yuriy acknowledges.

The company offers a wide range of residential and commercial electrical services. From simple tasks like installing chandeliers and changing electrical panels to more complex projects like remodeling restaurants, Mountain Coast Electric Co does it all. “We love working in Salem and the surrounding areas, from Portland to Eugene,” Yuriy says. Yuriy believes in the power of generosity and often finds ways to help those in need. “When you’re a business owner, you get a lot of requests for sponsorships, and I’m excited to be able to support various causes,” he says. Beyond financial sponsorships, Yuriy takes joy in anonymously helping individuals. “I believe the best money spent is money given away. It brings the greatest joy.”

Mountain Coast Electric Co has grown significantly through word of mouth and referrals. “In the beginning, I used services like Angie’s List and Thumbtack to get clients, but eventually, word of mouth became our biggest source of business,” Yuriy explains. Building trust with customers and contractors has been crucial. “Once people trust you and see your work, they’ll refer you for a lifetime.”

Networking through local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Home Builders Association has also played a key role in the company’s growth. “Being in the right rooms and letting people know we’re here has been important,” Yuriy adds.
