When you talk to Tony Cassinerio and Nathan Naggi, it doesn’t take long to realize that Willamette University’s MBA program is more than a graduate degree — it’s a launchpad for real-world leadership, a connector to the Salem community, and a supportive network that sticks with you for life.

Not just recruiters, both Tony and Nathan went through the program themselves, so they know firsthand what it takes to succeed, and what makes Willamette’s MBA program different. They’ve walked the path themselves, and are passionate about helping others do the same.

A Strong Local Focus With a Global Perspective

Willamette University, founded in 1842, holds the distinction of being the oldest university west of the Mississippi. Its MBA program, which has been running since the 1970s, is now one of the most respected in the region. But what really sets it apart is how deeply connected it is to the Salem community.

As proud proponents of the McClaran Leadership Foundation’s Leadership Salem program, Nathan explained. “We put every one of our employees through that program. Tony and I did it and we have somebody in there right now,” demonstrating their belief in building up local leaders who want to make an impact here in the local community.

That community-centered mindset is woven into every part of the program, whether it’s through internships, consulting projects, or collaboration with local organizations. “Right now,” Nathan said, “some of our students are working with Pat and the Marionberries,” taking advantage of the opportunity to apply everything they’ve learned in class to solve real business problems.

Real Experience for Recent Grads

“Our full-time [MBA] program is designed for students right out of college, most of the time with little to no work experience.” Nathan said. That’s where Willamette’s approach shines, helping students build their résumés while earning their degrees.

Through courses like the angel investing fund and the O’Neill investment class, students aren’t just learning theory, they’re making decisions that impact real money and real organizations. The students invest in startups, analyze stocks, and even award grants to nonprofits, learning to lead and manage with real consequences.

The program also emphasizes all three major sectors — private, public, and nonprofit — with dual accreditation by AACSB International (for-profit side of business) and NASPAA (for non-profit management). Willamette University MBA is one of only two universities in the country that holds the dual accreditation, reflecting their commitment to serving all kinds of organizations.

Flexibility for Working Professionals

For those already in the workforce, the part-time MBA for Professionals program is a strong option. Evening classes run two days a week from 6 to 10 p.m., designed to fit around full-time jobs and busy lives. And Tony, Director of Recruitment, knows exactly what that takes.

“I actually did it with three kids, and just had another child recently, so I’m a little [sleep-deprived], but you can do this,” he said. “This is a doable program for anybody who’s working.”

Whether you’re early in your career, pivoting into a new field, or aiming to move up in your company, the program is built to support you. And it’s not just for business majors. “We’ve had doctors, we’ve had lawyers, we’ve had nurses, mechanical engineers, technicians, you name it.” Tony said. “If you want to improve your skills, if you want to advance your business, this is the type of program that could help.”

What makes the experience especially personal, he shared, is the support. “You’re not a number. When you come to this program, your professors are going to know you by name. They’re going to help you.” Students also are going to lean on each other.

Always Learning: The MBA for Life

One of the most innovative parts of Willamette’s offering is the “MBA for Life” — free ongoing education for alumni.

“Once you graduate, you’re always going to be a member of Willamette MBA. You could come back and take classes for free, and then they charge you a nominal fee for books, basically bucks,” Tony explained.

The idea is to help graduates stay current with relevant skills as the industry evolves. “As things change in the industry…we start to add that to our curriculum,” Tony said. “So if you want to stay up to date…our curriculum is going to change. We’re going to be adding those courses; we can help you out.”

Scholarships That Make a Difference

Affordability is often a major concern when thinking about grad school, but Tony and Nathan emphasized that Willamette is committed to making the MBA experience accessible.

“One hundred percent of the students that we admit get some sort of scholarship,” Tony said. “And if your employer partners with us, you or your employee automatically get a $20,000 scholarship.” There’s no cost to the employer to partner with the program — just the commitment to share the opportunity with their team.

A Personal Connection Every Step of the Way

The application process at Willamette MBA is built around personal interaction — no automated emails or months-long waits. “Every student I recruit, I talk to myself,” Tony explained. “You apply, and we’ll get back to you quickly. You’ll hear from a real person who’s ready to help.”

He added, “If you got a bachelor’s, that’s kind of like the base level. After that, we’re moving [on to] experience. So, if you don’t have a bachelor’s, how long have you been working? What have you been doing in leadership roles?”

It all comes down to this: experience, dedication, and community-minded growth.

The message from Tony and Nathan is clear: Willamette’s MBA program is more than just a path to a better job — it’s a chance to grow as a leader, contribute to your community, and stay connected for life.

Whether you’re a student just finishing college, a professional ready to take the next step, or a business owner looking to empower your team, the Willamette University MBA Program in Salem Oregon offers an opportunity to learn, lead, and thrive right here at home.
