He’s been a silent staple of the Albany commute since 2017, but these days, the Waverly Duck is feeling a little “under the weather.”
After years of floating on Waverly Lake, our favorite giant yellow resident has seen better days. The Albany Parks & Recreation Foundation is now reaching out to the community to help fund a much-needed restoration and refurbishment to keep him looking his best.
The “6,000-Pound” Problem
It turns out that being a full-time lake resident is tough work. Over time, the Duck’s exterior has developed enough wear and tear that its foam interior now absorbs roughly 6,000 pounds of water weight every summer.
To get him back to his original light-and-bright self, the Foundation is aiming to raise $20,000. This project isn’t just a simple patch job—it’s a total “head-to-toe” makeover that includes:
- Interior Overhaul: Gutting and replacing the old, water-heavy foam.
- Structural Repairs: Professional fiberglass work to seal the exterior.
- A Fresh Look: A high-quality coat of paint to restore that signature yellow glow.
Double Your Impact
The Foundation currently has $5,475 set aside, but there is a great opportunity to bridge the gap quickly. An anonymous donor has stepped forward with a matching gift: they will match community donations dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000.
If the community can pull together that $5,000, we’ll be halfway to the final goal in one fell swoop!
How to Support
The Waverly Duck has brought a lot of smiles to Albany over the years. If you’d like to see him continue to bob happily on the lake for years to come, please consider making a donation.
