Before launching her esthetics career, Sonja worked for seven years at the Red Cross, where she supported people through life-altering events like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. “I was ready for something… calmer,” Sonja explained. That shift toward peace and personal wellness started during a visit to a Medi spa with her mother. Her mom had vessels bursting on her face, and the doctor referred them to a treatment facility.
“When we walked in, there was this water feature and soft music playing. One nurse rushing around apologized for being busy, and I thought, ‘If this is busy, sign me up,’” Sonja said with a laugh.
That visit didn’t just offer relief, it sparked a career pivot. Sonja asked questions, shadowed the treatment, and was told, “If you go to school, we’ll hire you.” Within two weeks, she’d found a school, got the syllabus approved, and enrolled, continuing to work part-time at the Red Cross while pursuing esthetics training.
After completing her education, Sonja joined Wellspring (owned by Silverton Hospital at the time), where she gained hands-on experience in both spa and medical settings.
“I was in the spa three days a week and in plastic surgery one day a week. That’s where I started learning the more advanced stuff,” she shared.
That balance of therapeutic and cosmetic care gave her the confidence to strike out on her own. She started downtown for seven years before moving her business to West Salem, where she’s been for the past six years.
Transition to a new location
On June 2, 2025, Sonja transitioned her office to a new location at 120 Commercial St. NE, Suite 350. Her new office is in Aiyana Aesthetics directly above Masonry Grill, once again in downtown Salem. Access to the office is by a door on the left side of the building. Once inside, there is an elevator that can be taken to the top floor.
Making a Difference, One Client at a Time
Sonja finds joy in seeing how small treatments can make a big emotional impact. “It doesn’t matter if it’s a facial or laser,” she said. “If it makes a difference in how someone feels, and they leave feeling better about themselves that just makes my heart so happy.”
While her clientele is mostly women between the ages of 30 and 80, Sonja joked that a few men have found their way in too, often tricked in by their wives. “They’re usually nervous,” she laughed, “so I talk about cars or something to help them feel comfortable.”
When Sonja’s not helping people glow, she’s enjoying everything Salem has to offer. She loves visiting local wineries, going out to eat, attending events at the Elsinore and Grand Theater, and walking her Australian Shepherd through Salem’s parks.
“I try to stay in Salem. I’m always going to local events,” she said. “And I eat out a lot and I love the restaurants here.”
Her support for Salem doesn’t stop at how she spends her free time. It shows up in how she runs her business, collaborates with other local professionals, and helps clients feel like family.
