There are some amazing places to kayak, paddleboard, or enjoy a relaxing float in the Salem, Oregon area. Getting outside is a great way to stay active, connect with nature, and enjoy the beauty of our city. Here are a few places where you can make a splash this summer season.
Wallace Marine Park (Riverfront Park)
Situated along the Willamette River in West Salem, Wallace Marine Park is one of the city’s most popular launch points. With a boat ramp, floating dock, and proximity to downtown, it’s a convenient and scenic place to begin your adventure.
Minto-Brown Island Park
Minto-Brown is a great space for those seeking calm, peaceful paddling in a nature-rich setting. Take the Willamette Slough out and back under the Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge by Riverfront Park for a casual afternoon. The water can get low towards the end of summer, so check ahead of time!
Keizer Rapids Park
Keizer Rapids Park offers access to the Willamette River and has a great launch site. With a public dock, boat ramp, trails, disc golf, sand volleyball, pickleball, and a playground, this spot is perfect for a full day of outdoor fun. Life jackets are available on-site.
Willamette Mission State Park
Just north of Keizer, Willamette Mission State Park provides a beautiful setting for water recreation along the Willamette River. The park features a boat ramp and dock, making it easy to launch kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. With its wide-open river views, peaceful shoreline, and ample space for picnicking or hiking before or after your paddle, it’s a great destination for a full day of outdoor fun. Be sure to check river conditions before you go.
Oregon Kayak Tours
If you’re new to paddling or prefer a guided experience, Oregon Kayak Tours provides both rentals and expert-led excursions. Enjoy popular guided tours through downtown or along serene stretches of river. There are even sunset paddling adventures to see Salem in a whole different light.
Independence Kayak Rentals
Located about 12 miles west of Salem, Independence Kayak Rentals is a great option for a relaxed river outing. They offer equipment rentals and access to a lovely stretch of the Willamette River. The routes between Buena Vista and Independence and Independence to Salem are favorites, and nearby cafes and breweries make it a great spot to spend a summer afternoon.
Turner Lake
Turner Lake provides a peaceful water environment just east of Salem in the city of Turner. This is a great spot for stand-up paddleboarding, casual kayaking, swimming, and fishing around the lake. You can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from Turn-n-Paddle through the end of September!
Silverton Reservoir
Silverton Reservoir is another favorite in the area for calm water recreation. This serene reservoir boasts scenic views and easy access for kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, boating, and fishing. It’s a great spot for beginners or those looking for a calmer, more laid-back experience on the water.
Prepare in Advance!
Before heading out, it’s important to be prepared. Waterway Access Permits are required for non-motorized watercraft 10 feet or longer, which includes paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes. Be sure to check the most up-to-date regulations and permit requirements before setting out. Water safety is also extremely important—always wear a life jacket, know your route, and watch for changing conditions. The Willamette River, in particular, can be especially strong in early summer due to snowmelt and higher water levels.
