As the publishers of WhirLocal Salem, we have the privilege of bringing to light the inspiring stories of our community’s people and businesses. Today, we’re focusing on Dan Farrington, the Business Development Manager at BBSI in Salem, Oregon. His journey and contributions to our local business scene are not just impressive; they’re a reflection of the vibrant spirit that drives our local communities.

Dan’s path to his current role at BBSI is as unique as it is inspiring. Born and raised in Newport, Oregon, Dan initially pursued education but soon found his calling in the business world. His journey led him to manage the growth of Rock and Rogers restaurants and later to found Sunrise Medical Consultants. Despite the challenges, including the closure of his business due to COVID-19, Dan’s dedication never wavered. He found a new beginning at BBSI, where he now helps other businesses flourish.

Dan’s involvement in the community goes far beyond his professional role. He’s a mentor at Union Gospel Mission and serves on the boards of Valor Mentoring and Be Bold Street Ministries. His work in these roles is driven by a genuine desire to make a difference. As Dan puts it, “It’s been the greatest experience I’ve ever had. Walking alongside men who’ve had rough times and helping them change their lives has changed my relationship with God and how I view the world.”

Dan & Linda Farrington

In his role at BBSI, Dan emphasizes the importance of personal connections in business development. He believes in being active in the community, attending events, and building genuine relationships. His approach to cold calling is all about starting conversations and understanding businesses, not just selling a service.

Advice for Local Businesses

Dan’s advice for small business owners is straightforward and practical. He encourages them to set realistic goals, build a strong network. Dan’s strategy is simple yet effective: “You’ve got to be present, involved, and vocal about your business. Share the value your business brings to others.”

He added, “Iron sharpens iron…always have a group of guys or a group of women that you you can share your daily problems and all the issues you come about and realize that you have all kinds of all the same problems, but finding different strategies of how to achieve those things.”

In the rapid-fire segment of the interview, Dan’s personal interests and aspirations came to light. His passion for snow skiing is a significant part of his life. As he puts it, “Well, I want to be able to keep skiing. I grew up snow skiing, and I love to snow ski, and my body doesn’t allow me to do it as much. So every year, my bucket list is to get on the slopes least top two or three times and I love it”.

Dan’s bucket list includes aspirations beyond the business world. He expressed a desire to visit Washington D.C., a goal that speaks to his interest in history and national affairs. “I’ve never been there,” Dan said, “And I would love to go.”

Two of his favorite local gathering places are Venti’s Cafe & Taphouse in South Salem, and Margin Coffee in Albany.
