Sometimes building a stronger community starts with something simple: sharing a meal, playing a board game, swapping a favorite recipe, or sitting down for a conversation.
This summer, four local high school students took that idea into Salem neighborhoods through the Teen Summer Internship program at Center 50+. Students from Sprague, West Salem, McNary, and Silvias River Charter schools each created a community event designed to bring neighbors of different ages together and encourage meaningful connections.
Bringing Neighbors Together
The Center 50+ Teen Summer Internship program focuses on making the most of neighborhood resources, creating opportunities for social connection, and helping people feel like they belong.
As the culmination of the summer program, each teen intern planned and hosted their own community-building event. The gatherings included a Lemonade and Conversation Stand, a neighborhood potluck picnic, a board game social, and a recipe swap where neighbors could exchange both favorite dishes and the stories behind them.
The events were intentionally simple and welcoming, making it easy for neighbors to participate, meet someone new, and spend time together.
Connecting Generations in Salem
One of the program’s biggest goals is encouraging interaction between teenagers and older adults who might not otherwise have many opportunities to connect.
By creating shared experiences, Center 50+ hopes to reduce social isolation, encourage greater understanding between generations, and strengthen relationships throughout Salem neighborhoods. The program also gives older adults opportunities to feel included and valued while encouraging young people to take an active role in their community.
Building Leadership Skills Along the Way
While their events benefited the community, the interns were gaining valuable experience of their own. Throughout the program, the students developed skills in communication, event planning, and leadership. They also created outreach materials that can help support the program in the future. This hands-on experience gives young people an opportunity to take an idea from the planning stage all the way through to a real neighborhood event.
Small Events Can Make a Big Difference
A lemonade stand or board game afternoon might seem basic, but sometimes those informal gatherings are exactly what help neighbors get to know one another. Through Center 50+’s Teen Summer Internship program, local teens helped create spaces where Salem residents could share stories, make new friends, and strengthen existing relationships across generations.
The initiative is a great reminder that building community doesn’t always require something big; sometimes it just takes an invitation to pull up a chair and join the conversation.
