For 50 years, Center 50+ has been helping Salem adults stay active, connected, and supported. What began as the Salem Senior Center has grown into a welcoming community hub with classes, wellness programs, social activities, volunteer opportunities, and resources for adults 50 and older.
Now, as Center 50+ celebrates its 50th anniversary, the City of Salem is continuing to bring more programs directly into local neighborhoods. Through the WOW Van (also known as Wellness on Wheels), Center 50+ is helping seniors connect with activities, services, and friendly faces without always needing to travel to the main facility on Portland Road NE.
Let’s take a closer look at how these mobile programs are serving Salem seniors right where they are.

Wellness on Wheels Brings Center 50+ Into the Community
The WOW Van is Center 50+’s mobile senior center, created to bring programs and services to parks, neighborhoods, clubhouses, and other community spaces throughout Salem. Instead of asking everyone to come to the center, Wellness on Wheels helps meet people closer to home.
Visits from the WOW Van can include fitness and wellness programs, mobility support, lifelong learning, arts and activities, social check-ins, technology tutoring, and help accessing food resources. The program also reflects strong community connections. When neighbors gather in familiar spaces, it becomes easier to build friendships, try something new, and feel supported.
The program has also earned national recognition. In 2024, the WOW Van received a Modernizing Senior Centers Innovation Award from the National Institute of Senior Centers for its creative approach to serving older adults.
A Neighborhood-Focused Approach to Senior Services
One of the most special parts of the WOW Van program is that it allows each neighborhood to help shape the experience. Center 50+ provides the support, but the people who live in the neighborhood help guide what feels most useful and meaningful.
That might mean a fitness class in the park, a craft activity, technology help, a friendly visit, or simply a chance to sit down and talk with others. For seniors who may have limited transportation, mobility challenges, or fewer opportunities to connect socially, these visits can make a real difference in their health and mental well-being.
Center 50+ has also nearly reached capacity in its 30,000-square-foot facility in northeast Salem, making mobile outreach an important way to continue serving more people across the community.
Connection Kitchen Adds Meals and Friendship
The newest part of Center 50+’s mobile outreach is the Connection Kitchen, a mobile meal program designed to support both nutrition and social connection.
The Connection Kitchen brings hot noon meals to local 55-and-older mobile home parks, independent living communities, and Salem Housing Authority residential sites. This gives older adults access to a warm meal while also creating a simple opportunity to gather, visit, and socialize.
For many seniors, that friendly interaction can be just as important as the meal itself.
Summer Programs and Community Events
Throughout the summer, Center 50+ is offering a variety of mobile activities and community events for Salem seniors. Programs may include creative activities, low-impact fitness opportunities, intergenerational gatherings, and neighborhood pop-ups in local parks and public spaces.
Center 50+ is also hosting anniversary events throughout the year. Residents can check the City of Salem’s Center 50+ page or program guide for the most up-to-date schedules, locations, and registration details.
Staying Connected at Every Age
Center 50+ has spent five decades helping Salem adults build friendships, learn new skills, stay active, and find support. With mobile programs like Wellness on Wheels and the Connection Kitchen, that mission is reaching even further into the community.
If you’re looking for a fitness class, a creative activity, technology help, a warm meal, or simply a friendly place to connect, Center 50+ continues to be a valuable resource for Salem residents 50 and older.
