As fall approaches, Albany Parks & Recreation is rolling out its September “Activate!” schedule, offering a varied lineup of health, creative, and wellness activities for all ages. Whether you’re looking to learn a new martial art, spark your child’s creative skills, explore rhythmic drumming, or access specialized wellness care, here is what’s starting up across town this September.
Intro to No-Gi Jiu Jitsu (Youth & Adult)
Starts Wednesday, September 2
Designed for beginners, this martial arts class introduces the fundamentals of grappling, movement, and self-defense in a supportive setting. Participants will build functional strength, coordination, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
- Dates: Mondays & Wednesdays, September 2 – September 30
- Ages 6–10 Intro: 4:10 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
- Ages 10–15 Intro: 5:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.
- Adult Intro: 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Fairytale Dance (Youth)
Starts Wednesday, September 2
Young dancers can explore the magic of movement through ballet-inspired routines, interactive songs, and playful props. This whimsical class helps build balance, coordination, and confidence while laying a foundation for basic dance techniques.

Afterschool Sewing (Teens • Ages 13–16)
Starts Wednesday, September 2
Give your teen a chance to get creative and build real, practical skills! Students will learn to use patterns to create garments and other fun projects while practicing both machine and hand sewing. It’s a great way to explore creativity, build confidence, and celebrate making something by hand.

Routine Footcare (Adult)
Starts Wednesday, September 2
Access comfortable, professional foot care provided directly by a registered nurse and certified foot care specialist. Individual sessions are scheduled in 30-minute appointments to support overall foot health and mobility.
- Dates: Wednesday, September 2 OR Wednesday, September 16
- Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Specific appointment times provided one week prior)
Rhythm for Wellness (Adult)
Starts Wednesday, September 3
Tap into stress relief and community connection in this judgment-free, beginner-friendly group drumming class. Using hand drums, percussion instruments, and vocal rhythms, participants will create simple beats to boost mood and focus. No prior musical experience or music reading required—instruments are provided, or you can bring your own!
