A significant piece of Albany history has been brought back to life, and it comes with a side of world-class dining. After a highly anticipated, multi-year renovation project, Sybaris Bistro has officially opened the doors to its permanent home inside the historic Oregon Electric Railway depot.
Located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Lyon Street, the beautifully restored 1912 terminal represents a massive triumph for local historic preservation and an exciting new chapter for downtown food lovers.
Restoring a Landmark
Owners Chef Matt and Janel Bennett purchased the former railroad station in May 2022. Partnering with local contractor Pyburn & Sons, they took on the monumental task of reviving the century-old terminal, working meticulously to preserve its original character while expanding the space to accommodate a premier dining experience.
Guests visiting the new location will discover an incredible mix of beautifully preserved original details and masterfully executed additions:
- Historic Clay Tile Roof: The building’s iconic exterior clay tile roof and architectural structure have been completely restored.
- Restored Depot Floors: The main dining room features the station’s original passenger waiting room flooring, where unique discolorations in the wood still mark the precise historical footprint of the original 1912 railway ticket booth.
- Grand Entrance Archway: A beautiful new exterior archway was masterfully added to the structure, giving guests a clear signal to the restaurant’s main entrance while matching the historic feel of the depot.
On the Monthly Menu
While the backdrop has changed, Sybaris’ deeply rooted culinary philosophy remains exactly the same. Chef Matt—a two-time James Beard Award nominee—continues to build a brand-new menu from scratch every single month. The dishes shift continuously to highlight what local farms, ranches, and purveyors are actively harvesting across the Willamette Valley throughout the year.
Everything from the daily artisan breads to the ice creams are crafted completely in-house, paired alongside an extensive wine list showcasing the very best of Pacific Northwest vineyards.
