Civic pride is alive and well in Greater Albany Public Schools! Since 2021, hundreds of local students have stepped up to share their unique visions for our community through the annual “If I Were Mayor” contest. This year, the spotlight shines brightly on two outstanding local students whose leadership and creativity have earned them well-deserved recognition both locally and across the state.

Celebrating Local Student Achievements

Congratulations go out to Alex from South Shore Elementary and Addie from Memorial Middle School! For their stellar local entries, both students earned some incredible hometown prizes, including gift cards to The Albany Pix Theatre and Albany Parks & Recreation. In a show of support for youth civic education, Albany Mayor Alex Johnson II also contributed some of his own personal cash to reward their hard work.

Taking it to the State Level

Albany has established a notable track record with this program, placing a student in the top three statewide every single year. The 2025-2026 school year is keeping that amazing streak alive in a big way.

Addie’s exceptional essay didn’t just impress local judges—it caught the attention of leadership across Oregon. Addie officially won first place in the state for her division, earning a $500 grand prize from the Oregon Mayors Association!

A Community Effort

An achievement like this is supported by a strong educational network. A big thank you goes out to all the creative local students who took the time to participate in this year’s contest. The community is also deeply grateful to the dedicated educators who inspire these young minds, with a special shoutout to Mrs. Blaine at North Albany Elementary Schooland Mr. Campos at South Shore Elementary for their continued enthusiasm for this fun, educational program.

A Presentation at City Council

The journey isn’t over yet for these two young leaders. Both Alex and Addie will officially present their winning entries to the community at the upcoming June 10 City Council meeting. Their submissions will be officially entered into the permanent record of Albany history, cementing their ideas for the future of our city.

This accomplishment is a phenomenal representation of Albany’s youth through creativity, leadership, and civic engagement. Congratulations, Alex and Addie!
