For many adults, going to the doctor can feel like a routine part of life. But for children, it can be something very different. New environments, unfamiliar people, and uncertainty about what will happen can all make a visit feel intimidating.

That’s why helping children feel safe at the doctor’s office is an essential part of pediatric care.

Why Feeling Safe Is Important

A child’s early experiences with healthcare can shape how they feel about medical visits for the rest of their life. When a child feels anxious or overwhelmed, it can make it harder for them to communicate what they’re feeling or cooperate during an exam. Over time, those experiences can lead to increased fear or avoidance of medical providers.

On the other hand, when a child feels safe and supported, they are more likely to engage, ask their own questions, and build trust with their provider. That sense of trust becomes especially important as they grow older and need to take a more active role in their own health.

Pediatric providers recognize that emotional safety is just as important as physical care.

“I believe to make them comfortable is the main thing in handling any kind of a pediatric patient,” shared WFMC Health pediatrician Nitish Jagpal.

What Helps Children Feel More Comfortable

Creating a positive experience for children often comes down to small, intentional choices. Taking time to speak at a child’s level, using language they can understand, and explaining what’s happening before it happens can all help reduce fear.

Pacing of the appointment is equally important. When visits feel rushed, children can become more anxious. When providers slow down and give children time to adjust to the environment and medical equipment, it allows them to feel more in control of the experience.

“I get to their level and talk to them comfortably, making them feel safe so they can open up to me,” Dr. Jagpal explained.

Supporting Parents Is Part of Supporting Children

Children don’t experience healthcare in isolation. They look to their parents or caregivers for cues on how to respond. When parents feel calm, heard, and respected, it typically helps children feel more at ease as well.

That’s why pediatric care at WFMC Health also focuses on supporting parents—especially when they have questions, concerns, or uncertainty.

For Emily Nebzydoski, MD, creating a space where families feel comfortable asking questions is a key part of the visit. “I just hope that they feel heard and that they’re comfortable with me… and they feel like they can ask me anything,” she shared.

Building Trust Over Time

A single positive visit can make a difference, but deep trust is built over time. Each interaction, each conversation, and each moment of listening contributes to a larger relationship between the provider, the child, and the family.

“Families look for a doctor who is kind, who listens to them, who they can trust,” Dr. Jagpal shared.

That trust becomes especially important as children grow older, face new health challenges, and become more involved in their own health journey.

Dr. Emily is especially intentional about creating a safe, non-judgmental space for both parents and adolescents.

“I really try to make sure they know they can tell me anything and that nothing’s really surprising to me. I’d rather them be truthful with me than not,” she explained.

What This Means for Your Child’s Care

At WFMC Health, pediatric visits are designed to support both the emotional and physical needs of children. That means taking the time to listen, creating a comfortable environment, and building relationships that help children feel safe coming back.

Even if a child feels nervous at first, those experiences can change over time with consistency, patience, and the right care team beside them.
