You love spending time with your family. But now that your child is learning at home, you’re spending more time with your family than ever. Sometimes, you likely feel that everyone’s expecting you to be the “perfect parent” who can hold down a job and stay home with their kids at the same time. Feeling stressed? Here are some tips on avoiding burnout while you’re at home with the kids.

1. Take Some Time for Yourself

Staying home to help your kids with their virtual classes adds a lot of extra responsibilities onto your plate. You’ve got to keep them focused, answer their questions, figure out how to use the platform, and more. It’s understandable to need a break once in a while. Don’t be afraid to tell your children that you’re all going to take 20 minutes for break time. It’s not unheard of for your child—they’re used to going to recess twice or three times a day, after all.

2. Communicate With Your Child

It’s okay to admit to your child if you’re a little confused or frustrated. They’re probably feeling the same way. You don’t need to share every frustration with your child—they’re not therapists—but you don’t need to hide your feelings behind a mask of cheerfulness either. Be honest with your child if you’re not sure how to solve the math problem or you’re having trouble figuring out a schedule. And while you’re at it, encourage your child to express their own thoughts and feelings during this challenging time.

3. Accept That You’re Going to Make Mistakes

Last year, you dropped your child off at school and went along your way. Now, you feel like you’ve practically become the teacher yourself, with your child looking to you for direction and asking for help on their homework. Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t know the answer to a question or can’t quite understand the school’s curriculum. You’re doing the best you can—and in the end, that’s all anybody can really ask for.
