Craftsman Design and Renovation

For context, we are writing this review having completed a total remodel / renovation project of our 1909 Craftsman home in Southeast Portland, completed in 2015. The project was a complete rebuild of the interior with dormers and stairs added as part of the remodel. On completion, the outside of the house remains a classic Craftsman house. On the inside, walls have been moved, and new electrical, plumbing and foundation systems added, all supportive of a transformation with a contemporary interior. The bottom line is that our experience with Craftsman Design met and exceeded our expectations in all of the ways that matter in a remodeling process. Specifically: • Core to this project was the management expertise of the senior design team, the project manager and lead carpenter who coordinated the subs. Well done and it worked. Their process added that critical factor you want in a partner - they brought up what we had not thought about. We benefitted and continue to benefit from their expertise on a daily basis. • Like all projects of this nature, there were hiccups and challenges. In our instance, the project ran longer than anticipated as a result of unexpected findings in the demo and change orders we added. This also contributed to a cost increase of about 5%. That said, the end result was that the house came in at the standard that both they and we expected. • We have been living in this house for 10 years. The house is long past “newly renovated”. We continue to appreciate the quality of the work and have had only minor handyman issues. The house is solid and a pleasure to live in. • We found everyone on the Craftsman team to be especially generous in their willingness to clarify and explain any and all questions we brought to them. It was a great partnership.

We had a wonderful experience and plan to work with them again when we are ready to update our new home. We miss the beautiful kitchen they built for our family. We love the high quality of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and durability. The team was great to work with. They have effective communication skills and took the time to explain everything to us. In addition they were on budget with the project. We would highly recommend Craftsman Design and Renovation.

Exceptional Bathroom Remodel – A Perfect Fit for Older Homes We purchased a 1940 Tudor home in the Mt. Tabor neighborhood, and while we loved almost everything about it, the master bath was a glaring sore spot. We immediately started searching for a highly rated design-to-build firm in Portland that specialized in maintaining design consistency with older homes. While several top-rated firms weren’t interested in a bathroom-only job, Craftsman Design came through and agreed to visit us right away. From the initial meeting to the project's completion, our experience with Craftsman was nothing short of professional and courteous. Their designer created a stunning concept that beautifully incorporated the existing design elements and materials found throughout the rest of the house. They delivered something far beyond what we could have dreamed up ourselves. The entire team was incredibly responsive to our feedback and made us feel like valued collaborators throughout the process. When the project was complete, the finished bathroom exceeded our expectations in every way. The attention to detail and commitment to maintaining the character of our Tudor home were exceptional. To top it all off, our bathroom was featured in Old House Journal—a testament to the quality of work Craftsman Design delivers. We wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again and highly recommend Craftsman Design for any renovation project, especially if you’re looking to preserve and enhance the charm of an older home.
