Cataract Surgery
I am a 62 yo who ended up benefitting from cataract surgery. Pre-op in July, surgery on successive weeks in August with good clinical outcomes (20/20 bilaterally). I have no issues with the Doctor or staff's bed side manner or anything regarding the clinical side of this procedure.
I do have an issue with the related business/financial side.
I was told from the start that I would qualify for insurance coverage. At no time was the total cost of the procedure explained to me. The form that is given to the patient prior to surgery only lists the Surgeon's fee and makes reference to the surgery center. No reference is made regarding the anesthesiologist fees. I paid the physicians fee in advance but on the day of the procedure the Salem Laser & Surgery Center demanded payment ($1,000) or the surgery could not be performed. This happened again on the subsequent surgery day for the second eye. At no time were separate anesthesiologist fees mentioned which ended up being nearly another $1000.
Listen, everyone knows that healthcare services have a cost. I also know that everyone's insurance coverage is unique to them.
What I do have an issue with is that Eye Care Physicians & Surgeons takes no responsibility for explaining the full cost of the procedure to the patient in advance so that they can be fully informed.
