Nestled in the heart of Aurora, Colorado lies a hidden gem that you won’t want to miss – the Aurora History Museum. Tucked away in the Municipal Center between the Police Dept. and the City Hall, the museum primarily focuses on our city’s local history. Despite its smaller size, this museum is bursting with fascinating exhibits and programs that are sure to delight history buffs and curious visitors alike.
Best of all, admission is completely free, as are the majority of their programs, making it accessible for everyone. With a commitment to engaging with people no matter where they are economically, the Aurora History Museum is a true community treasure.
The museum features three “traditional” exhibits which rotate occasionally. These currently include the Growing Home exhibit showcasing the city’s growth throughout the years; The Great Outdoors of Aurora, celebrating our vibrant outdoor opportunities and taking deep dives into the history behind some of our most loved outdoor activities; and A History of Lowry Air Force Base, providing a unique insight into the area we now know for the ice rink, boutique stores, and greenspaces. The Lowry exhibit will be in place until July 11th when we will all get a chance to look Beyond the Storefront and see the businesses, past and present, that have helped the city thrive.
More than just the exhibits, the museum celebrates the city’s residents with the Community Gallery. The gallery hosts exhibits, work by local artists, lecturers and speakers, as well as community events. The space is available to be reserved for history enthusiasts or anyone else looking to host an event in a unique venue. Prior private events have included baby showers, several receptions, and even a wedding!
Down the east hallway guests will currently find many historic photos but will soon be able to view the War & Peace exhibit by the local non-profit group Roshni. The exhibit will feature several pieces speaking about war, peace, or both, with personal accounts of those who have experienced them.
Come experience everything the museum has to offer Tuesday through Friday any time between 9a and 4p or weekends between 11a-4p. Bring the little ones on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 for Mornings at the Museum activity and story time!
Groups of 9 or more are always encouraged to come in but are asked to call prior to make arrangements to ensure all visitors will have the opportunity to move around freely and experience everything there is to offer without feeling rushed or cramped.
