For golf lovers everywhere, the idea of an indoor golf facility that’s open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with top of the line, full swing simulators and some of the most popular courses in the world sounds like a faraway dream. For golfers in Omaha, it’s now a reality, thanks to franchise owner Mercedes Fonte. This August, Mercedes opened Omaha’s (and the Midwest’s) first The Back Nine Golf in Regency and golf enthusiasts everywhere are rejoicing—and improving their game. The best part, according to some Omaha golf lovers, is being able to play during the winter.
Before The Back Nine
Before The Back Nine, Mercedes lived in Miami where she had two previous careers in the hospitality and finance industries. Her first career was working at a golf club which led her to start playing at the age of 19. Later, she became a financial advisor and found herself with less time for golf. When she moved to Omaha and learned about The Back Nine and the opportunity it presented, she knew it was something she had to do. Mercedes recognized the popularity of golf in Omaha and realized that many golfers, like herself, are short on time and would love a place like The Back Nine. Her intuition was right as the new business has been a huge success.
The Back Nine Benefits
The Back Nine has numerous benefits for local golfers including the opportunity for year-round practice and a sense of community. According to Mercedes, the development of a golf community has been one of the biggest benefits. The facility hosts leagues, tournaments, and events. In addition, corporate memberships offer perks such as hosting clients or employees, organizing private events, and gaining exposure through marketing opportunities within the facility.
Companies can showcase their logos on our TVs, run ads, and even have the chance to sponsor an entire bay with their branding,” says Mercedes. “The facility also offers co-marketing opportunities through events. People have been pleasantly surprised, as I don’t think anyone else is doing this.”
All Ages, All Hours
All ages enjoy The Back Nine, including kids. Mercedes mentioned a young member who is so talented that he made it to Augusta for their junior program. She said he comes in at 5 am for his tee time before going to school. Retirees often come in around 7 am before their round of golf. Then there are the “lunchers,” corporate individuals who come in to host clients during the day.
“In the afternoon,” says Mercedes, “we start seeing young professionals showing up around 3 pm, and that can go late, sometimes until midnight or 1 am.”
Not Just for Men
Even though most golfers at The Back Nine are men, Mercedes is excited about the increasing number of female players. She mentioned plans to start women’s leagues and wants to encourage more women to bring their friends.
“I think there are other women out there that need that flexibility, whether they’re in business or full-time mothers or both and they love golf, this gives you that flexibility. I’d love to see more ladies.”
Try it Out
For those who want to see what The Back Nine is all about, Mercedes offers free 30-minute demos. “You can schedule a tour online and come try it out,” says Mercedes. “Either myself or one of my great friends that have trained will be there. Just remember to bring your clubs!”
Basic memberships start at $140 per month for unlimited golf 24/7.
