Community Spotlight: Shalee’s Day Spa

In a world where the daily grind often leaves us feeling disconnected and stressed, Shalee’s Day Spa in Cabot, Arkansas, offers more than just a retreat; it provides a deeply personal and community-oriented sanctuary where the art of relaxation is combined with a rich legacy of care.

For over 25 years, Shalee’s Day Spa has been a beacon of wellness and relaxation in Cabot, evolving from a humble one-person operation into a thriving, multi-faceted business that has become a cornerstone of the local community. The spa’s journey began in 1999, when founder Shalee Uhl opened a small office in the back of her parents’ health store. “There was no deep thought in it, just a gut feeling and flying by the seat of my pants,” Uhl fondly recalls, emphasizing the spontaneous and passion-driven nature of the spa’s inception. What started as a modest venture quickly grew, expanding its services and footprint over the years to meet the growing demands of a loyal clientele.

Shalee Uhl

Uhl’s entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to her craft laid the foundation for what would become a trusted and beloved establishment. Her passion for massage therapy began when she was just 11 years old, sparked by a family trip to Hot Springs where she experienced her first professional massage. “I walked out and told my parents I wanted to be a massage therapist when I grow up,” Uhl said, reflecting on the moment that set her on the path to a lifelong career in wellness.

The spa has seen significant milestones, including several expansions and the introduction of advanced treatments like Hydrafacials and Red Light Therapy. These services, which cater to a wide range of wellness needs, from skincare to deep relaxation, have become synonymous with the spa’s reputation for quality and personalized care.

The recent transition in ownership to Uhl’s sister, Kendra Knapp, marks a new chapter for Shalee’s Day Spa, one that honors its rich history while ensuring its future remains bright. Knapp, who took over the business in August 2023, didn’t initially see herself as a spa owner. With a background in criminal justice, Knapp spent 22 years working in a prison, where she had to meticulously follow policies and procedures—a stark contrast to the more intuitive, client-focused work of running a spa. Despite her different professional background, Knapp had been working for Shalee’s Day Spa for three years before the ownership change, initially taking on the role of office manager.

“When she considered selling the day spa, I was like, huh, wonder if that’s something I should consider,” Knapp shared, reflecting on her decision to keep the business within the family. After discussing it with her husband and recognizing the deep ties the family had to the spa, Knapp decided to take the plunge. But there was another, more pressing reason behind her decision: the well-being of the women who worked there. “There are people here who have been with us for over 10 years,” Uhl added. “I didn’t want someone coming in and changing everything, firing people. It’s a good women’s workforce.”

This concern for the staff was not unfounded. A change in ownership could have led to uncertainty for the employees, many of whom are single mothers balancing their work with the demands of raising children. Knapp’s decision to take over ensured that the spa’s close-knit team remained intact, providing stability and continuity for both the staff and the clients they serve. “Wecan relate to it. We’re moms,” Knapp added. “We understand that you’re a mom and your child comes first. We understand that you’re sick. In bigger companies, you’re just somebody, so we like to think that, as a small business, everybody’s important to us.”

Shalee’s Day Spa stands out not just for its wide range of services but for the deep personal care and attention that each client receives. With offerings that include various types of massages—ranging from Swedish and deep tissue to more specialized treatments like CBD oil massages and cupping therapy—the spa caters to a diverse clientele with different needs. The spa also provides an extensive selection of skincare treatments, with Hydrafacials being a standout service. These facials, which deeply cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin, have become particularly popular for addressing issues like acne, fine lines, and uneven skin tone.

The personal touch at Shalee’s Day Spa goes beyond just the services; it’s woven into the very fabric of how the business operates. Uhl, who still works part-time as a massage therapist, shared a particularly moving story about a client who used his monthly massage sessions as a reward for staying clean during his recovery from addiction. “For 12 months, he came in every 30 days. I would know that meant he made it another clean 30 days,” Uhl recounted, illustrating the profound impact that her work has had on individuals’ lives. This story is just one example of how the spa’s services extend beyond mere physical relaxation to touch on deeper emotional and psychological well-being.

Another powerful testimonial comes from Taylor, Knapp’s daughter, who works as an esthetician at the spa. Taylor recounted the journey of a young man who came in for acne treatments. “He had really bad cystic acne, so we started him on a treatment plan,” Taylor explained. “Over time, we adjusted it, so at this point now we’re just doing maintenance facials… I’m very happy with his confidence; he says it has increased, and his mom seems to love that he loves facials.”

Knapp and her team continue to prioritize building and maintaining strong relationships with their clients, understanding that trust and comfort are crucial in the wellness industry. “We’re approachable here. You don’t walk into a place where everything is medical and intimidating,” Uhl noted. This emphasis on approachability and a welcoming environment has been a key factor in the spa’s enduring success. The spa’s atmosphere is designed to be warm and inviting, making clients feel at ease from the moment they walk through the door. Uhl adds that every client is treated with the same care and respect, regardless of how often they visit. “Even if they only come once a year, they’re treated just the same as the person who comes every week,” she said, highlighting the spa’s commitment to inclusivity and personalized service.

Community involvement is another cornerstone of Shalee’s Day Spa’s philosophy. The spa actively participates in local events and initiatives, recently offering discounts to teachers and participating in a block party that brought together various local businesses. These efforts not only support the community but also reinforce the spa’s role as a local fixture that cares about the well-being of its neighbors.

Looking to the future, Knapp plans to maintain the spa’s successful formula while encouraging her team to continue their professional development. “If (the estheticians and therapists) have other interests to add to what we currently offer, I want them to explore those,” she said, reflecting her belief in continuous improvement and adaptability. However, she remains committed to keeping the spa’s core values and offerings intact. “I don’t want to change anything that we currently have going on, just continue and enhance it,” she said.

The stories that emerge from Shalee’s Day Spa are a testament to the lasting impact that a place of healing can have on its community. Whether it’s helping a young man regain his confidence through acne treatments or supporting someone through their recovery journey, the spa is more than just a place for physical pampering—it’s a sanctuary for the soul.

In a time when self-care has become more important than ever, Shalee’s Day Spa continues to be a vital part of the Cabot community. It’s a place where the hands that heal also care deeply about the people they serve, making it not just a spa, but a cherished part of the lives of those who walk through its doors.
