A Personal Journey of Passion
Born and raised in Norman, Oklahoma, Brady Sexton always knew he wanted to contribute positively to his community. His extensive involvement reflects his deep-rooted commitment to Norman. But it was his foray into the bustling world of restaurants and bars that truly ignited his passion. Brady’s journey in the hospitality sector started in college, where he first experienced the adrenaline and joy of working in a restaurant.
Brady’s path led him to work with the Hal Smith Restaurant Group, where he learned the industry’s ropes. However, the call to start something of his own was irresistible. When a grocery store in Norman relocated, Brady saw an opportunity to create something unique. His long-time friend, Ira Koplowitz, co-founder of Bittercube Bitters and a seasoned bartender, inspired Brady to venture into the world of craft cocktails. This inspiration laid the foundation for Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails, a concept radically different from the usual restaurant and bar scene in Norman.
Crafting Authenticity from Ground Up
Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails was built literally from scratch. Brady, with the help of his father, put up every wall and crafted every corner of the restaurant, instilling a personal touch into every aspect. The name ‘Scratch’ was chosen to reflect their commitment to authenticity and quality. Everything served at Scratch is made from real, whole ingredients, devoid of artificial additives or high-fructose corn syrup. This dedication to quality extends from their ketchup to their mayonnaise and beyond.
Brady’s visit to the Violet Hour in Chicago, one of the first craft cocktail bars in the Midwest, profoundly influenced his vision for Scratch. Witnessing the meticulous crafting of cocktails with fresh ingredients and genuine techniques was a revelation. This experience shaped Scratch’s commitment to quality and authenticity, from their old-fashioned cocktails to their coffee-rubbed pork tenderloin.
Beyond Just a Restaurant: A Third Place for the Community
Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails is more than just a dining establishment for Brady. It’s a ‘third place’ – a concept beyond home and work where community members gather, discuss ideas, and move society forward. Brady envisions Scratch as a hub for the most respected members of Norman to come together over excellent food and drinks, fostering a sense of community and progress.
Looking Forward
Brady Sexton’s Scratch Kitchen and Cocktails stands as a beacon of culinary excellence and community spirit in Norman. It’s a place where every dish and every drink tells a story of passion, quality, and the joy of sharing good times. Brady’s journey from a restaurant employee to the owner of a pioneering establishment in his hometown is a tale of passion, commitment, and a deep-seated love for his community. Scratch is more than a restaurant; it’s a testament to the power of a dream realized through hard work, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to quality.
