In January of 2008, Zac Triemert decided to take his love of brewing and distilling that he’d developed as a pre-med student and turn it into a business. It turned out to be the right idea at the right time as the craft brewing industry was on the verge of exploding. He opened Lucky Bucket Brewing Co. and became the first craft brewery in Omaha to package and distribute their product to local stores. They also have the distinction of being the first distillery—Cut Spike—in Nebraska since prohibition.

Lucky Bucket went through a number of changes over the years, one of which led to Zac leaving and starting a second brewery and distillery, Brickway, in the Old Market. Zac eventually returned to resume ownership of Lucky Bucket and continues to own and operate both facilities. All beers, both Brickway and Lucky Bucket, are made in the La Vista location while each facility has its own individual distilling equipment.

Below is an interview with Zac Triemert.

I think it’s unique that we have two different brewery/distilleries in the Omaha area. Both breweries have four year-round beers as well as three seasonal beers and occasional one-off beers. I think the size of both our facilities is also a differentiating factor. We have a room available for rent at the Brickway location and our Lucky Bucket location is huge and focused more on the brewing experience and tours with just a small tasting room. We have a lot of events and really encourage our guests to learn about the brewing and distilling processes while still enjoying our products.

We recently had a launch party for our 14-year-old brandy. We make the brandy from local wines, which I think is unique and people love that we are supporting local in that way.

Our two flagship beers, Lucky Bucket Lager and Certified Evil. Lucky Bucket Lager got watered down when I was no longer managing the brewery, and I made it a goal to bring it back to its original recipe when I resumed ownership.

My goal is just to continue to have people enjoy the beers and spirits we make and to make sure people are having a good time when they drink them. As with our Brickway beers and spirits, we have Celebrate, Commiserate, Commemorate on each of our bottles and cans to remind ourselves why we do what we do and to send the message that sharing a beer or a drink is the perfect way to come together and mark an occasion.
