House of Colour is dedicated to helping those in Omaha nail their first impression. A franchise business, House of Colour is based in the U.K. (hence the spelling of “colour”). It was founded 40 years ago and has been offering franchises in the U.S. for 15 years. The company provides color and style analysis, closet edits, personal shopping and more.
Below is an interview with Darcie Zauha, franchise owner of House of Colour West Omaha.
How long have you been in business and what was your motivation for starting the business?
I have been a franchise owner for 5 ½ years and love the being able to impact others and give them confidence every time they walk into their closet, leave their house, walk into a store, and all the other places that they go! I was (and continue to be) passionate about helping people see themselves in a different, positive way.
How has the business grown over the years?
I was the 26th consultant in the U.S. and now we have more than 350 stylists across the United States. Personally, I started as an individual franchise owner, and now have four stylists who work with me. Our revenues resulted last year in being the #2 franchise in the world. In the Omaha area, we’ve grown from two stylists to 10 in five years.
What do you think sets you apart from other businesses in the same industry?
House of Colour has the best and most comprehensive color analysis process in the world and we have 40 years of experience perfecting it. In addition to color analysis, we offer bespoke style consultations, wardrobe edits, and personal shopping. We have lifelong clients and develop relationships with our clients that goes beyond just identifying their best colors.
What do you and your team like about living and working in Omaha?
Omaha is such a great city where I have a lot of connections, yet I meet new people every day. Our clients are truly how our business grows and we love being able to see people “in the wild” utilizing what they learn with us. There’s nothing better than running into clients at a local restaurant or store and being able to celebrate their confidence!
What are your plans for the next five years of your business? 10? 25?
Continue to grow our client base, revenues, and develop more services and products for our clients.
If you could choose one thing you enjoy most about your business, what would it be?
Seeing clients transform in front of my eyes. Sometimes people feel uncomfortable because for most, the process starts with them in no makeup. Seeing themselves and the power of color is a truly unforgettable experience. Couple that with helping people see their bodies positively and teaching them how to confidently dress their body, and I’ve got a great opportunity! I also truly love working with my team, they are amazing women who share my passion. It’s a joy to work with both clients and our team.
How does your team give back to the community?
At our National Conference, we worked with Dress for Success and were able to provide color and style analysis as well as personal shopping for 10 women, and it was such a powerful experience for me personally as well as the clients twe worked with. On a local level, we often donate to charities hosting fundraising silent auctions, etc. We also host a clothing swap 1-2 times per year and donate the items after the event to the Lydia House.
If you could give other business owners a piece of advice, what would it be?
Starting an IG handle (the equivalent of hanging up a shingle!) doesn’t mean that clients will just show up. You have to hustle, and providing a great service to your clients is the best source of future clients. Meet people, be genuinely interested in them, and be yourself! Know what’s profitable for your business and spend your time doing that.
