Community Spotlight: Art Kits and More

When Phoebe Flynn first stumbled upon diamond painting, she had no idea it would soon become the cornerstone of her thriving business. Art Kits and More has quickly become a beloved haven for art enthusiasts of all ages. Flynn’s story is a testament to the power of passion and perseverance, especially in times of adversity.

During the pandemic, Flynn’s sister introduced her to diamond painting, a modern twist on mosaic art using tiny beads to create intricate designs. “My sister goes, ‘Oh, I’ve been having anxiety issues and my therapist recommended I get into this.’ It is really cool,” Flynn recalls. Intrigued, Flynn did her research and discovered that she already had connections with manufacturers. This realization set the stage for her entrepreneurial journey.

“I started going to fairs and festivals, just like I’m used to,” Flynn explains. Her first major opportunity came when she set up shop at the Air Force Base exchange. The response was overwhelmingly positive, prompting her to open a full-time store off last year. Now at 2794 S 2nd St. A, in Cabot, she can reach a broader audience.

Art Kits and More offers a variety of creative outlets, from paint-by-number kits to handcrafted gifts. However, the diamond painting kits remain the star attraction. Flynn explains, “There’s something about it that balances a person out while they’re working on it.” She highlights the therapeutic benefits, noting how engaging in repetitive art projects can help switch the brain from left to right mode, promoting relaxation and creativity.

Flynn’s artistic inclinations are deeply rooted in her family history. “My grandmother, my mother were painters. My dad was a tinkerer and an inventor,” she shares. This rich heritage of creativity and resourcefulness has undoubtedly influenced her approach to both art and business. Even as a child, Flynn was encouraged to explore the potential of everyday objects, a mindset that continues to drive her innovative spirit.

While Flynn’s journey into the arts was lifelong, turning her passion into a full-time business was born out of necessity. During a severe recession in California in 1998, both Flynn and her husband found themselves unemployed. “I turned around, there’s my sewing machine in the corner and I said we’re going to the swap meet,” she recounts. From making neck coolers and toys to collaborating with friends for more products, Flynn’s resilience and adaptability were key to her success.

Moving from California to Arkansas was another significant transition. Flynn notes, “Cabot is like a wagon wheel. You’ve got Highway 5 coming into it. You’ve got 40 just a little ways off of it. You’ve got 167.” This strategic location, coupled with a supportive community, has been instrumental in her business growth.

Flynn’s approach to business is as meticulous as her diamond paintings. Each kit she offers is carefully curated to ensure quality and enjoyment. Customization is a unique feature at Art Kits and More, with options to transform personal photographs into diamond painting kits. “We can also go out and there are services that will customize paint-by-number kits, embroidery kits,” Flynn explains, showcasing the versatility and customer-centric nature of her offerings.

Marketing has primarily been through word of mouth, with Flynn emphasizing the importance of a strong network. She advises aspiring entrepreneurs to be aware of market trends and find unique niches to stand out. “When you go to fairs and festivals, you can see the same craft being done over and over. You just passed 10 vendors of the same product. You haven’t seen anything new. ‘Oh here’s something new. What do they got?’ You want to be that vendor. What are you offering that no one else is offering?” she says, underscoring the need for differentiation in a saturated market.

Looking ahead, Flynn envisions expanding Art Kits and More to include a gallery for local artists and more community events. “We’d like to be closer to the store so that we can open up longer hours, maybe six to seven days a week, have after-hour group events,” she shares, demonstrating her commitment to fostering a vibrant artistic community in Cabot.

Art Kits and More is not just a store; it’s a place where creativity blossoms, and people find joy and relaxation in every bead, brushstroke, and craft.
