Pet of the Month: Brando
This month, Cabot Animal Support Services is featuring a lovable and energetic dog named Brando, who is currently up for adoption. Brando has been at the shelter for about a month, and according to Hannah, one of the kennel techs, he’s proven to be a loyal and affectionate companion. If you’re looking for a dog who can bring both playfulness and warmth into your home, Brando could be the perfect fit.
Brando, a lab mix with some Rhodesian Ridgeback characteristics, is around two years old. His unique personality makes him stand out from the other dogs. He loves to play, especially wrestling with other dogs, which seems to be one of his favorite activities. “Whenever he plays with the other dogs, because he is good with other dogs, he kind of wrestles him and then puts his legs underneath him and is on the ground wrestling him so he can’t get to his paws,” said Hannah, highlighting Brando’s playful nature.
But it’s not all about high energy for Brando. He has a soft, affectionate side that makes him a great companion for someone looking for a loyal friend. “He’d like to put his head on my knee and just let it sit there. So he likes to cuddle a little bit,” Hannah explained. Brando’s ability to balance playtime and cuddles makes him an excellent dog for a home with an active lifestyle that also enjoys quiet, cozy moments.
While Brando has many wonderful qualities, it’s important to be aware of some challenges that come with adopting him. During his intake, he was diagnosed with heartworms. The shelter has already started the first stage of his treatment, which involves administering medication. “For heartworms, usually, you just gotta watch and make sure that they don’t overexert themselves. Usually, you just gotta watch them, make sure that they don’t get out of breath too often, and take them to the vet regularly,” Hannah explained.
Brando’s future adopter will need to continue his treatment plan, but the shelter has a fund to assist with the costs. “We have a fund that’ll help (pay for heartworm treatment). So every time we have a heartworm dog come in that gets adopted, usually there’s a fund that’ll help pay for that. The people just have to bring them back,” said Hannah. This support ensures that adopters aren’t left alone in managing Brando’s care, but it’s essential for adopters to be aware of the responsibility.
Brando’s mix of playful energy and affectionate loyalty makes him a unique dog. He thrives when playing with other dogs but also loves quiet moments with his favorite humans. Hannah emphasized that “He definitely will be a loyal friend to that one person. And maybe protective over them, for sure.”
