Oregon’s Snowpack Just Hit a Record Low — Here’s Why Salem Should Pay Attention
If you’ve been looking east at the Cascades lately, you’ve probably noticed something missing — snow. Oregon’s snowpack is currently at its lowest level since record-keeping began in the early 1980s. The Cascades are sitting below 50% of normal, and Mt. Hood is around 19%.
Why does that matter here in Salem? That snowpack is basically our natural water tower. It melts slowly through spring and summer, feeding our rivers, supporting farms across the Willamette Valley, and helping keep wildfire risk manageable. Without it, we could be in for a tough summer.
The good news? Snowpack typically peaks in late March or early April, so there’s still time for some good storms to make a difference.
We’ve been serving Salem families and small businesses from our office on Portland Road since 2001. If last summer’s wildfire smoke reminded you to check your home coverage, we’re always happy to help.
