“We want Mokka Bon to be a place where people come and just feel welcome. Even on a busy Saturday, we want it to be a family-friendly place where people can sit, chill, and never feel like they’re bothering anyone,” Katie shares.
Katie Duff’s journey to launching Mokka Bon Coffee Shop is a testament to faith, persistence, and a deep-rooted love for her community. Born and raised in Troy, Illinois, Katie and her husband have always had a heart for missions and a vision to integrate their passion for ministry into the everyday lives of those around them. Their dream became a reality in the form of Mokka Bon, a cozy and welcoming coffee shop that serves as more than just a place to grab a latte—it’s a space for connection, community, and faith.
How a Mission Trip Inspired the Creation of Mokka Bon
The idea for Mokka Bon came about several years ago. Katie and her husband envisioned a coffee shop that would serve as an extension of their ministry work. However, it was during a mission trip to Uganda, with a stopover in Brussels, Belgium, that the final piece of the puzzle fell into place. They discovered Belgian coffee shops and were immediately inspired by the culture. This experience solidified their dream to open a coffee shop back home in Troy.
“We tried the Belgian waffles and coffee and instantly fell in love. It completed the vision we had for the coffee shop. We thought, ‘This is what we want to bring back to Troy,'” Katie recalls.
Bringing Belgian Flavors to Troy IL
Upon returning from Africa, they faced the challenge of finding the right location in Troy. After months of searching and praying, Katie’s aunt, who worked at a local bank, mentioned that the bank building was going up for sale. Though unconventional, Katie saw the potential in the property and quickly jumped at the opportunity to purchase it. With the help of friends, family, they transformed the space into the welcoming coffee shop it is today.
“There were times when we felt like we would never find the right space, but we just kept waiting and praying. Then suddenly, everything fell into place, and it was clear that this was meant to be our spot,” Katie shares. “We actually closed on the building the day we got back from Africa—it was perfect timing.”
Mokka Bon: A Community Coffee Shop With a Heart for Service
Katie and her husband wanted Mokka Bon to be more than just a coffee shop—they wanted it to be a mission field in their own backyard. Their vision was to create a place where people could gather, enjoy great coffee. Mokka Bon has plans to stay open after hours to host worship nights, making it a unique and peaceful place to connect.
“We’ve always wanted to use Mokka Bon for ministry,” Katie explains. “We want to have worship nights where the doors stay open after hours, the coffee is still brewing, and people can come for live music and connection.”
What Makes Mokka Bon Unique: Belgian Influence and Local Charm
The name “Mokka Bon” reflects the inspiration behind the shop—it’s derived from the French and Dutch languages spoken in Belgium, meaning “the good mocha.” The blend of Belgian coffee culture and local, small-town charm makes Mokka Bon a one-of-a-kind spot in Troy. Katie has created a menu that blends traditional coffee favorites with seasonal treats, all served in a warm, welcoming environment.
“The name ‘Mokka Bon’ felt perfect because it combines our love for the Belgian coffee shop experience with the warmth of our small-town community,” Katie says.
