SEARCY, Ark. — On October 5, 2024, Spring Park in Searcy will host the Conquer Chiari Walk Across America to raise awareness about Chiari malformation, a neurological disorder that affects more than 300,000 people in the U.S. The event will feature a walk, car show, raffles, and activities for all ages.
The walk, organized by Mary Duhon and Kassi Lawrence, will kick off with registration at 11 a.m., followed by the walk starting at 1 p.m. Participants can register in advance at walk.conquerchiari.org, or they can sign up on the day of the event.
“Many people still don’t know much about Chiari,” says co-organizer Kassi Lawrence. “This walk is about spreading awareness and funding research to help find better treatments. It’s more common than people think, and even here in Searcy, we have a large number of people affected by it.”
Chiari malformation is a serious disorder where brain tissue extends into the spinal canal, causing symptoms like headaches, balance issues, and vision problems. Currently, there is no cure, but treatments such as brain surgery can relieve some of the pressure and pain.
For Lawrence, the cause is deeply personal. She was diagnosed with Chiari at 21 and has undergone three major brain surgeries since. “These surgeries are life-changing, and they take so much out of you. But awareness is the key to ensuring people get the help they need, and that’s why this walk is so important,” she says.
In addition to the walk, the event will include a car show featuring the Dirt Road Car Club, raffles, door prizes, and games for kids. Silent auctions and food options will also be available for attendees.
All funds raised from the event, including donations and proceeds from the auction, will go toward the Chiari Malformation Institute, which supports research and programs that aim to improve the quality of life for patients.
Those interested in contributing can also donate auction items or sponsor the event. “We’re always looking for community support,” says Lawrence. “It’s about coming together to help a cause that’s often overlooked but affects so many lives.”
Participation in the event is free, but walkers who raise at least $40 by August 16 will receive an official event t-shirt.
