Community Spotlight: Central Arkansas Animal Hospital
Ashley McMullen and Wesley McMullen, a dynamic duo in the veterinary world, have brought a fresh wave of enthusiasm and expertise to Searcy, Arkansas, with their clinic, Central Arkansas Animal Hospital. After meeting during their final year at LSU’s veterinary school, the McMullens embarked on a journey that brought Ashley from the Caribbean island of Saint Kitts to the heart of Arkansas.
“We’ve owned it for a year and a half,” says Ashley, reflecting on their relatively recent acquisition of the clinic from Dr. Michael Liles, a local veterinary stalwart who managed the practice for over 40 years. “He definitely trusts us to carry it on,” she adds, underscoring the importance of maintaining a legacy while infusing it with new energy.
The transition from Dr. Liles to the McMullens wasn’t just about taking over a business; it was about earning the trust and confidence of the community. “We kept a lot of them,” Ashley notes, referring to the long-time clients who stayed with the clinic through the change. This retention is a testament to their dedication to providing consistent and high-quality care.
Central Arkansas Animal Hospital stands out not just for its experienced team but for its commitment to advanced veterinary care. “We really have both a passion for emergency and urgent care,” says Ashley. This dedication is evident in their investment in state-of-the-art equipment like dental x-rays and ultrasounds, which many other practices in Arkansas lack. “Dental x-rays are something that has kind of become the standard of care, but a lot of practices in Arkansas actually don’t have that yet,” she notes. The ability to offer such advanced diagnostics allows the clinic to provide more comprehensive care, catching issues that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The clinic’s willingness to accommodate same-day emergencies and walk-ins also sets it apart. “Very rare that we turn a patient away,” says Wesley. This policy has endeared them to many pet owners in the community, who know they can rely on the clinic in times of urgent need. Their approach is particularly beneficial in rural areas where access to emergency veterinary services can be limited.
The McMullens’ journey to Searcy was influenced by their love for the outdoors and a desire to be part of a close-knit community. “I’ve really liked the outdoors and stuff, like kayaking or boating,” says Ashley. The proximity to Heber Springs, where Wesley is from, and its recreational opportunities was a significant draw for them. However, adjusting to the colder winters has been a challenge for Ashley, who hails from Florida. Despite this, the couple has embraced the local lifestyle and built strong ties within the community.
Despite the rewarding nature of their work, the McMullens acknowledge the challenges that come with it. “The most challenging is just helping people through the end-of-life care,” Ashley admits. Managing the emotional and financial aspects of pet care can be tough, but their approach emphasizes compassion and understanding. Wesley adds, “It’s also about balancing the business side of things, managing people, whether it’s employees or clients.” This balancing act is crucial for maintaining a harmonious and effective practice.
Looking ahead, the McMullens have ambitious plans for Central Arkansas Animal Hospital. They hope to expand their current location and possibly open a second clinic. “We’d like to open another location and kind of grow off of that,” Wesley reveals. They are also committed to supporting the next generation of veterinarians through student externships and shadowing opportunities. “We definitely plan to continue,” Ashley says, highlighting their passion for mentorship. This focus on education not only helps aspiring vets gain practical experience but also ensures that the clinic remains at the forefront of veterinary practices.
Their journey is a testament to their dedication to animal care and the community. The McMullens are not just building a business; they are nurturing a legacy of trust, care, and advanced medical practices in Central Arkansas. Their vision for the future includes not only expanding their physical presence but also enhancing the quality of care they provide. “We’re pretty passionate about having people shadow and learn because I think it’s really important for them to get a realistic view of it,” says Ashley. This hands-on approach to education reflects their commitment to excellence in veterinary medicine.
The community in Searcy and the surrounding areas has embraced Central Arkansas Animal Hospital, recognizing the value of having such a dedicated and skilled team available. The McMullens’ focus on both small and large animals allows them to serve a broad spectrum of needs, from family pets to livestock, further cementing their role as a vital part of the local fabric.
The McMullens’ journey from vet school to running a thriving clinic in Searcy is a story of passion, dedication, and community spirit. They are not only providing top-notch veterinary care but also fostering a supportive and educational environment for future veterinarians. As they continue to grow and expand, their commitment to their patients and clients remains unwavering, promising a bright future for Central Arkansas Animal Hospital.
