Studio H Designs, owned and directed by Sadie Harper, is a boutique interior design firm focused on personalized, functional, and aesthetically pleasing living spaces. Sadie applies comprehensive solutions, transforming homes and commercial spaces through a detailed, design-focused approach. In this article, we’ll explore how she blends elements to achieve harmony and balance, reflecting each client’s unique style and needs and enhancing daily living.

The Essence of Design: Beyond Beauty

Sadie Harper believes good design creates harmony and functionality within a space. “There’s a calmness that comes with having things working together,” she said, highlighting her mindset on eliminating internal friction caused by mismatched elements. For Sadie, design is deeply personal and practical. It elevates the quality of life by tailoring spaces to the client’s needs, freeing each room to serve its intended purpose while also being a place of beauty and comfort.

When asked what drew her into the field, Sadie answered, “Interior design makes me come alive; I have this innate desire to reshape the environments around me into what I see in my mind. Since childhood, I’ve always visualized what a space could be and then figured out how to bring that vision to reality. Solving tangible, real-world problems like this is incredibly fulfilling. It’s not just about making a room look good; it’s about it functioning correctly for the people who live in it.”

For Sadie, the function and feel of a room go beyond just outward appearance. It’s about understanding what the client needs from the space—whether to boost productivity or to relax—and then crafting it to serve those needs. It’s not merely about filling it with expensive furnishings; it’s about using the right materials in a way that enhances their life.

A Personal Touch: The Client-Centered Process

Sadie’s journey in design fuses innate talent with learned business acumen. She didn’t initially pursue a traditional interior design degree, knowing practical experience would hone her natural eye for aesthetics. Instead, her background in business and merchandising combines creativity with strategic planning. This blend allows her to not only envision beautiful spaces but also to understand the operational and functional aspects of each project.

Sadie’s implements a design-focused, detailed approach. When asked to describe her process, she said, “I start with an informal phone call to get a feel for what you’re looking for, your investment level, and what specific challenges you might be facing. Then, we’ll meet in person to dive deeper and explore some options. When you decide to proceed, I’ll bring in tradespeople, select specific items, and provide a cost breakdown, making sure you’re informed and educated every step of the way.”

Mastering Space: The Art of the Possible

Studio H Designs handles remodels, big and small, all the way up to full-house sourcing projects, buying all the furniture and accessories to style the entire house. But Sadie’s specialty lies in full gut-job bathroom remodels and transforming unused spaces. She’s an expert at modernizing outdated bathrooms, even squeezing in more storage space where no one thought possible. And she loves converting unfinished rooms into masterpieces.

“My favorites are those messy bathroom renovations,” said Sadie. “I enjoy taking on remodels and furnishing projects. But beyond that, I love tackling unfinished spaces like basements, attics, or areas above garages, integrating them into your home, so you can’t imagine how you lived without them. Every element serves a purpose and reflects the overall design vision, distinguishing my role from that of builders or specific tradespeople who focus only on their expertise.”

Studio H Designs: A Signature Approach

Sadie’s approach to managing the project and making it successful centers on advocating for the client and for her vision. She described how she sometimes has to collaborate with a contractor to get the final result she wants. “A builder is going to talk you into building what they can build and talk you out of building what they don’t want to build. I hold them accountable to the design. The set builder and lighting engineer don’t direct the Broadway production; the director does. That’s what I do.”

Vintage 1970s Bathroom: during the renovation process

One of Sadie’s most recent bathroom remodels involved modernizing a retro 1970s avocado green hall bathroom to include a deep soaking tub for the homeowner. In order to make room, she replaced the existing window with a narrower one. The wider tub and expanded shower surround wouldn’t have worked otherwise. And it required finding just the right tub. “I searched everywhere. She wanted an oval tub, no square edges. It had to be deep enough to soak in, no jets, and it had to fit in 57-inch-long alcove. I found exactly one tub on the market.” The transformation required some clever adjustments, but the result was precisely what the homeowner wanted.

The Impact of Professional Design

Working with an interior designer unburdens homeowners from coordinating and overseeing every aspect of a project – which is time-consuming! The designer orchestrates everything, saving homeowners time and stress but also preventing unnecessary mistakes (and the extra costs). Essentially, the designer’s experience and established connections streamline the process, delivering a cohesive and well-executed outcome.

As a boutique interior design and remodeling firm, Studio H Designs excels at handling the details and providing customers with peace of mind, knowing their project will be done right the first time. Sadie emphasizes her commitment to clients by always being the primary point of contact throughout the project. “Unlike larger firms, I don’t delegate clients to an associate; I’m directly involved from start to finish, with my team supporting me from behind the scenes.”.

When thinking about tackling a project, your first call should be to an interior designer. A professional designer will refine your vision, address both functional and aesthetic aspects, and create a comprehensive plan. “A lot of clients believe they’ll get free design from a contractor, but that’s not the case – they charge for the design component as well. Contractors also focus on building, not designing, which will end up costing you more in the end. By involving a designer from the start, your project stays within established parameters, holding your vision from start to finish, and avoiding expensive (and unnecessary) modifications.”
