1. Changes in an Existing Spot

While many people are born with spots on their bodies and develop more moles as they get older, it’s important to be mindful of changes to any existing spots you may have. If there is a significant or sudden change in size, shape, or color, this could be a sign of skin cancer and you should get it checked by a doctor.

2. Non-Healing Sore

Sores can occur for many reasons. Often, a sore will go away on its own or can be treated accordingly. But sores that don’t heal are a cause of concern. More specifically, you should watch out for sores that bleed or develop a crust.

3. A Red Bump With Specific Characteristics

Watch for any red bumps on the body that are shiny on the top of the skin. You may also notice a red bump that is rough and feels scaly or itchy.

Signs Based on Skin Cancer Types

It’s important to note that signs vary from person to person and depend on the type of skin cancer present. Here are a few signs based on skin cancer type.

  • Basal cell carcinoma: Pearly or waxy bump on the skin, a flat and rough patch on the skin, or a sore that bleeds and doesn’t fully heal.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma: Signs include a firm red nodule, a scaly or crusty lesion with irregular borders, or a painful or itchy skin lesion.
  • Melanoma: Signs include changes in the appearance of a mole (usually irregular edges, growing size, change in color, or abnormal shape)

Keep in mind that experiencing one of these signs doesn’t automatically mean you have skin cancer. But seeing a healthcare professional can help you rule out the possibility of cancer or get you on the right treatment plan if cancer is discovered.
