If you’re like most drivers, you probably don’t think about the filters in your car until they start to cause problems. But it’s important to know about the different types of filters and what they do, because if one of them isn’t working properly, it can affect your car’s performance and even its safety. Let’s go over the four types of car filters and why it’s important to change them when the time comes.

Oil Filter

The oil filter is responsible for trapping dirt and debris as the motor oil circulates through your car’s engine, which helps to keep the oil clean and the engine lubricated. When you regularly change your oil or get it changed at your local auto shop, you’ll likely need to change out the oil filter as well. This way, you’ll avoid contaminating your brand new oil and also rest assured that everything is running as smooth as possible. If the oil filter is old or clogged and not doing its job, your engine can start to wear down and cause serious problems down the road.

Air Filter

Your car’s air filter helps to keep dirt, dust, bugs, or other particles out of the engine in order for it to run efficiently. If the air filter gets too dirty or clogged, you may see the “check engine” light come on or notice dark exhaust coming from your car’s exhaust pipe. Contaminated air can damage your engine and shorten its lifespan, so it’s important to change or clean your air filter regularly—especially if you drive in particularly dusty conditions.

Cabin Air Filter

The cabin air filter’s job is to filter the air inside of the car where passengers sit, which is known as the cabin. This filter can remove allergens, dirt and dust, bugs, leaves, and even bad smells from the air so that you and your passengers can be comfortable during the drive. A clean cabin air filter can help keep your car’s air conditioning system working its best. Replacing this filter when necessary can keep it from getting clogged and allowing contaminants into the cabin.

Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is the last line of defense against rust, dirt, and other fuel-related debris in your car’s engine. A good fuel filter protects the fuel injectors and plays a large role in the performance level of your car. If it becomes clogged and needs to be replaced, you might have trouble starting your car or accelerating as your fuel pump starts working overtime. The best way to avoid running into these types of problems is to replace the fuel filter as recommended by your car’s manufacturer or user manual, or roughly every two years.
