Alice found herself trapped in historic downtown Salem this past weekend! Hundreds of people flocked downtown to save her from the ravages of the Queen of Hearts. If you found yourself near the capital building, you likely had an interesting view of the “Golden Man”, likely obstructed by dozens of Cheshire Cats, Tweedle-Dums and Dees, and perhaps strangely, an Alice or two (perhaps in search of herself?).

A huge thanks to the team at Clued Upp, who set up a wonderful scavenger hunt that brought more than a hundred teams to attempt to rescue Alice from the Queens dastardly clutches. Teams started in the morning or late afternoon, and were given a series of clues and quests to find Alice. Zany characters would send players around on small quests, solving riddles, or even doing puzzles on your phone.

The entire experience is run on an app with geo-location, similar to Pokémon Go. As players got close to the capital building with the app open, the White Rabbit popped up on screen and offered them a quest. From there, a timer started to rescue Alice. Teams raced from location to location, solving clues as a group (or eaves-dropping; we see you behind the tree!) and competing in a leaderboard style competition.

Plenty of prizes to be had through the Clued Upp team as well, including some for those most fashionably dressed for the occasion. We’d wager roughly half of the teams took the time to don wonderfully crafted costumes you’d almost guess came from a live-action production. Others dressed in team colors, sports jerseys, or their Saturday morning jammies. It was delightful to see so many people laughing and playing in historic Downtown Salem.

Clued Upp will be returning with Alice in Wonderland to Salem again on November 5th. You can view the details for that here: https://www.cluedupp.com/products/alice-salem-or
