When you think of fall in Collinsville, you might hear the roar of the crowd, spot pom-poms glittering under the sun, and feel the energy of a youth football game in full swing. For decades, the Collinsville Raiders Football and Cheer organization has been at the heart of it all — not just building athletes, but shaping confident young leaders who carry the spirit of community wherever they go.

We had the joy of chatting with Eran Distler, the Raiders’ passionate Athletic Director, who shared what makes this long-standing nonprofit such a vibrant and vital part of Collinsville.

A Legacy of Local Pride

The Collinsville Raiders have deep roots, dating all the way back to the 1970’s. What began as a grassroots effort to give local kids a place to play football and cheer has grown into a powerful program that still holds tight to its original mission: creating a safe, fun, and disciplined space for kids to learn and grow.

From tiny five-year-old “Tykes” in oversized helmets to eighth-grade athletes preparing for high school, every Raider is taught more than just how to run a play or hit a cheer stunt — they’re taught confidence, sportsmanship, and resilience.

“This organization isn’t just about sports,” Eran explains. “It’s about creating lifelong friendships, community involvement, and teaching our kids how to rise up — even after a tough loss.”

More Than a Game

Yes, touchdowns and trophies are exciting — but for the Raiders, it’s what happens in between the plays that truly counts. The coaches, many of whom are former players or dedicated parents, volunteer their time to teach, mentor, and lead.

“The coaches don’t just coach — they lead,” says Eran. “They’re at practice after working all day, showing up to games early, giving pep talks, making sure every kid feels seen and heard.”

The Raiders even align their techniques with Collinsville High School’s football program, helping to build a seamless transition for athletes as they move up the ranks.

“Our goal is to mirror the high school program so we can be a true feeder system,” Eran shares. “We want these kids to enter high school already understanding the system, the plays, and the values.”

No Kid Left Behind

One of the Raiders’ proudest policies is their commitment to accessibility. At just $200 per season — including uniforms, equipment, and a full slate of games — the program stays affordable. And if a family’s facing financial hardship, help is available.

“We have a ‘no kid left behind’ philosophy,” Eran emphasizes. “If a family’s struggling, we have scholarship opportunities. Everyone deserves the chance to play.”

Raiders Cheer: A Program on the Rise

Once viewed as a secondary offering, Raiders Cheer has completely transformed into a powerhouse program. Under the leadership of Cheer Director Samantha Baudendistel— who Eran calls “one of the most driven people I’ve ever worked with” — the cheerleading squad has grown by leaps and bounds.

What used to be a sideline-only team has blossomed into a dynamic competitive program. Today, cheerleaders can choose between sideline cheer, competitive teams, or both — giving kids room to find their fit and shine.

“We went from maybe 30 cheerleaders to over 75,” Eran says. “Honestly, without the cheer program, the football side might not survive. It’s that strong.”

And yes — they even host local cheer competitions and off-season training. Talk about dedication!

Community-Powered & Volunteer-Fueled in Collinsville

The Raiders operate without paid staff. Every practice, game, and fundraiser is powered by generous volunteers. From board members to team moms to concession stand heroes, it’s truly a community effort.

Fundraisers include Glow Bingo, restaurant nights, and even an annual car wash in partnership with local business Extreme Detailz — a fun day that brings players, cheerleaders, and families together.

“We always need more volunteers,” Eran says. “Everything from picking up trash during games to running the clock or announcing. It’s a great way for students to get service hours or for residents to support local kids.”

💥 Why It All Matters

Beyond the touchdowns and trophies, the Raiders offer something deeper: hope, belonging, and purpose.

“A lot of our kids come from homes where school and sports are the only safe places they have,” Eran shares. “We make sure the Raiders feel like family.”

And the results speak for themselves. Eran’s own son started playing with the Raiders at age eight — and now plays college football in Wisconsin.

“I truly believe the Raiders laid the foundation for his success,” she says proudly.
